TL;DR

Planet Pizza? Never heard of them, we're Wingza

I had to jet out this evening but wanted to make sure I got a meal in, so that means it's pizza time. The past few times we've had pizza we've been ordering from Gino's and of course it's been great. It's been pointed out that I don't have any reviews of Gino's and I'm thinking next time we get pizza I'll do one. But today we're not talking about Gino's.

Welcome, to Planet Pizza. Well, kind of.

I decided to try a new place and looking on Google Maps there was a small plaza that had Planet Pizza and Wingza, two pizza shops, next door to each other (or so I thought). Their homepage had a PDF menu on it which had some delicious looking specialty Italian pizzas. Unfortunately every other page on the planet pizza website 404'd. As much as I was tempted by the Italian pizzas you know we had to go with the classic toppings. I ordered two medium pizzas one with pepperoni bacon sun-dried tomato and one with pepperoni sun-dried tomato pineapple. Incredibly this came to 22.99 which is a pretty great price for two mediums.

The Façade

I was super excited to try Planet Pizza, I expected it to be a Futurama-esque old school pizza joint, but when we pulled up I was kind of surprised and disappointed. I couldn't see any signs for Planet Pizza. All I saw was the Wingza Pizza place. Now, my wife and I looked around and she pointed out that the phone number we ordered on was the same as the one for Wingza, so we went in. Much to our surprise, it seems that Wingza and Planet Pizza are the same place.

Our pizzas were waiting for us, but we took a moment to browse the beverage fridge and see what kind of sauces were available. They had a type of sauce called Planet Dip, and my curiosity got the best of me. After inquiring and learning it was creamy garlic we pulled some out. They were small plastic containers filled with hand-poured creamy white sauce, which is generally a great indicator of quality dip. We grabbed four, two for each of us. While the sauces were $1.50 each, generally I'm willing to pay a good premium for some house-made creamy garlic sauce. My wife has had the wonderful idea of making our own creamy garlic style sauce out of greek yogurt, so I think we might try that next time.

The Za

The pizza itself looked solid, with fresh toppings and a good bake, but I noted that it lacked cheese. My wife thought it had the perfect amount of cheese, but she generally likes less cheese. Between her finding it great and me finding it a little lackluster, it's clear that the cheese situation was underwhelming. The sauce (which was very visible due to lack of cheese) was a classic out-of-the-can tomato paste sauce. Nothing special, nothing terrible. The dough and the crust however was standout, and quite tasty. Now, the "Planet Dip", I'd say was fine. It's better than something you'd buy from Sobeys, but certainly worse than the kind of sauce you would get at Figaro's. This sauce looks like it's homemade (with its individual poured plastic containers), but it's masquerading as such, as it's clearly not made in-house. There's a distinct lack of love to the flavor.

Notably, with the toppings, the sun-dried tomatoes were very dark. And by dark I mean overcooked. And by overcooked I mean they were black. Have a look close at the sun-dried tomatoes on the pineapple pizza, they look like black olives they're so dark.

Would we order from Planet Pizza again?

While I don't want to besmirch the good name of Planet Pizza (or Wingza) I don't think we'd order from this place again. I'm not saying there was anything wrong with the pizza or that it wasn't solid, but there are just better options. If you're in a bind and you're way behind and you're willing to make a deal, then planet pizza is certainly not the worst option, but it goes without saying that it's not the best option. I'd say it's close to on par with Gino's on Bridgeport, but of course Gino's edges it out just for its consistency, better sauce, and the clear care that they put into each pie.
